About the Durham Organic Gardeners' Association

The association is a local group of the national organisation Garden Organic, also known as HDRA, and holds regular meetings with the aim of promoting organic gardening. In addition to talks and garden visits for members we hold a number of public events. Recent examples have been a Gardener's Question time evening and our annual Potato Day events.

Snow on our first potato day

The potato days are held annually at Bowburn near Durham on a Saturday around the end of January or the begining of February. At these events we have for sale a range of seed potatoes, many organic, to enable gardeners to try smaller quantities then are usually available in commercial packs.

The morning of our first ever potato day found that there had been a considerable snowfall overnight and were concerned as to whether this would cause people to stay at home. We needn't have worried - gardeners in general seem to be a pretty hardy lot - and we had a successful day.
